Blackhead Trail - NOW OPEN
This a great little coastal walk, with stunning views and a bit of an incline up to Blackhead Lighthouse but well worth the climb.
We took the kids and parked up at Whitehead Carpark. The path is well sign posted and will take around 1 hour to get to the Lighthouse (Ignore Google maps estimates). Around halfway into the walk you come across new section, trekking closely along the cliffs of Blackhead. The path is nicely concreted under foot, dotted with handrails and bridge sections along the way, ideal for kids and elderly.
Along the way you will be graced with impressive caves and rock formations and off-course the open waters of the Irish Sea. Passing into a small cave and out the other side, it does get a little more technical, especially the steps to the top.
Once at the top the path spirals towards the Lighthouse, there is a beautiful cliff-top spot which you can stop, rest and take it all in but its advisable to keep your kids within arm's reach!
There two ways to get back to the carpark, back down the same route or follow the path around the Lighthouse, until it opens onto a road. A little further up is an old Stile, we climbed over this and took the path to the right, which lead us to a flight of steps, joining back onto the coastal path.
I have made a short video of a first person view from the cliff walk to the Lighthouse, which you can view here.
